Writing Lab Outline, Description and Expectations

"Quantity
produces quality. If you only write a few things, you're doomed."
—
Ray Bradbury |
Purpose and Outline of the Course
Ray Bradbury, author of "The
Flying Machine," a short story you probably read back in
eight grade, suggests that writing a lot is the equivilant of
writing well. While Bradbury's sentiment has merit, it's not
entirely true. Writers, especially young writers, need direction
and focus in order to produce quality writing. This is what
10th grade writing lab aims to provide for you.
Writing lab is not a magical recipe that will extract better
writing from you all on its own, however. If you put in the
time and dedication, are open to constructive criticism and
help from your writing lab teacher and others, writing lab can
assist you when writing...
• about literature
• analytically • thematically • about non-fiction • using multiple documents and texts • about world history and geography • creatively • using Christensen Rhetoric • for career and college preparation • to express values, beliefs and goals • to improve development, organization, language and mechanics • reflectively
Getting Writers What They Need
While writing lab focuses on improvement for everyone, we know that
different writers need different levels of help. After all, writing
is a lot like juggling — It's difficult to keep all the balls
in the air at the same time, isn't it?
Writing lab recognizes this as much as it recognizes that most writers
struggle with different writing issue. Some are proficient in developing
their writing, some are advanced in that same area, and still there
are others who are novices when it comes to developing their writing.
That's why writing lab focuses many of its lessons and activities
based on varying writing levels.
